Music at St John’s C.E. Primary Academy
Through a strong curriculum, rich enrichment and meaningful performance opportunities, music at St John’s C.E. Primary Academy plays an important role in school life. As a church school, music strongly supports our vision of living life in all its fullness. It provides children with opportunities to express themselves, experience joy, creativity and reflection, and develop a sense of belonging. Through music, pupils are encouraged to experience awe and wonder, build confidence and collaborate with others, supporting their personal development while enriching both their spiritual and cultural understanding.
Our Music Curriculum
Music is a valued and integral part of the curriculum at St John’s C.E. Primary Academy. We follow the Kapow Music Scheme of Learning, which provides a well-sequenced and progressive approach from the Early Years through to Key Stage 2. The curriculum enables pupils to develop skills in singing, listening, composing, performing and appraising music across a wide range of genres, styles and traditions.
Lessons are carefully structured to build musical knowledge and understanding over time. Pupils learn to use musical vocabulary accurately, develop rhythmic and melodic skills and gain an appreciation of music from different cultures and historical periods.
Instrumental and Enrichment Opportunities
The music curriculum is enhanced through the support of visiting peripatetic teachers, who provide additional opportunities for pupils to learn to play musical instruments. Children can access tuition in piano, guitar, drums and violin, allowing them to develop instrumental technique, read notation and perform with increasing confidence.
In addition to curriculum music, a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities are available to all pupils. These include recorder club, choir and orchestra, ensuring that children of all abilities have opportunities to engage with music beyond the classroom and to develop their interests and talents.
Performance and Community Links
Performance is a central feature of music at St John’s. Pupils regularly perform within school and the local community, helping to build confidence and a sense of achievement. These opportunities include performances during regular church services, school concerts, and participation in local events such as a recorder festival.
Children also have the opportunity to perform in larger venues and take part in high-profile events, such as Young Voices, where they perform as part of a large-scale choir. These experiences are memorable, inspiring and help to raise pupils’ aspirations while strengthening their understanding of music as a shared and powerful experience.
Inclusion and Personal Development
Music at St John’s is inclusive and accessible to all. Lessons and enrichment opportunities are designed so that every child can participate and succeed, regardless of prior musical experience. Pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, perseverance, teamwork and pride in their achievements.
Through high-quality teaching, a broad range of enrichment and meaningful performance opportunities, music at St John’s C.E. Primary Academy enriches school life and ensures that children leave with positive musical experiences and a lifelong appreciation of music.
